Basics of sustainable business

Sustainability has become a hot topic in business and whether we like it or not, sustainability is here to stay. Over the last 30 years, the topic has moved from the margins of companies to the top. So what is "sustainability"? How and when is it relevant to an organization? In this course, you will gain a new framework for evaluating sustainability efforts. Using this framework, you will explore how sustainability relates to business and the unique role the private sector plays in it. You'll then discover the implications of sustainability for different roles within an organization and answer critical questions to ensure that sustainability is a strategic driver of growth for your company. Along the way, you'll explore examples of the complexities organizations face in meeting sustainability goals.

Sustainable financing principles

Finance is widely regarded as an obstacle to a better world. The Sustainable Finance Principles explain how the financial sector can be mobilised to counter this. By using finance as a means to achieve social goals, we can move the planet and its economy away from its current path towards a world that is sustainable for all. Throughout the course you will learn about the UN Sustainable Development Goals, how social and environmental factors should not be considered externalities, learn about sustainable banking and asset management, effective engagement, analysing sustainable scenarios and creating long-term value.
Finally, you will understand how sustainable finance can be used as a tool to manage the transition to sustainability.

Sustainable digital innovation

Two of our biggest business challenges are digitalisation and sustainability. They are rapidly changing the way we do business today and the direction our business will take in the future. In this course, we therefore explore the business opportunities that can open up when we align our strategy with our sustainability goals. You will gain knowledge about understanding the sustainable contextual framework, the methods and tools that can help your business address sustainability challenges through different means, how digital technologies can help you manage and innovate your role in the enterprise ecosystem and drive sustainable development in business and society, and existing and emerging cases for sustainable solutions using digital technologies - as these solutions have value for industries in different markets.

Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations announced 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopted by 193 member states, the goals represent an important international step towards putting humanity on a sustainable development trajectory. In this study, you will therefore gain a historical overview of how sustainability has been understood, as well as an in-depth understanding of the SDGs - what they are, how progress can be measured, and what relevance the SDGs have for the management of global systems that support humanity. How different societal actors are responding to and implementing the SDGs will also be explored.

Implementing the sustainability strategy

Complex problems often require complex solutions. You'll learn the latest problem-solving methods and how you can apply them to sustainability issues in business. Systems analysis, design thinking, behavioral economics, positive psychology, crowd-sourcing, and big data can help create solutions to some of the most critical sustainability problems facing organizations today. You will explore each of these problem-solving approaches and get a hands-on experience applying them to a key sustainability problem. You will then learn strategies on how to combine the approaches to create a more balanced strategy. With these effective tactics, today's sustainability problems can become tomorrow's unique market opportunities for your organization.

Responsible management: in the practice of sustainability, accountability and ethics

Managers are increasingly confronted with issues of sustainability, responsibility and ethics. Responsible management is an integrative approach to sustainability, accountability and ethics that enables you as managers to address these challenges competently. This course will facilitate the learning process so that you can engage in changing practices to be more sustainable, responsible and ethically aware. We will first introduce you to the context of the trend towards responsible management practices, then explore the basics of each set of issues, sustainability, accountability and ethics. You will then work on your own responsible management assignment and explore responsible management practices in an area of specific professional interest (e.g., strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, organization, operations, supply chain, human resources, marketing and communications, international management, accounting and finance).
